Lest you confuse Rachael Ray as a "terrorist sympathizer," Dunkin Donuts is pulling an ad in which the Food Network star, talkshow host, cookbook author, world-dominator, etc. dons a scarf that some have likened to a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.

The "large print silk scarf" is still on sale at Urban Outfitters in the UK as of this writing.


Rachael Ray's choice of scarf (or, rather, her stylist Gretchen Monahan's choice) caught some heat when conservative Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin, among others, bloggingly wondered if Rachael's "clueless sporting of a jihadi chic keffiyeh was "spurred more by ignorance than ideology," and even pondered if the blunder was worth boycotting DD over.

Dunkin Donuts has since released this statement:
"In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

The New York Times commented on this thin line between fashion and politics back in Feb. 2007. According to the Times, Urban pulled the scarves from their US stores. There's no mention of their availability in other countries.
